Book Review

I’ve just finished my first book of 2019, Hug Your Haters by Jay Baer. I was initially contacted by Jay on LinkedIn last year and after a bit of a chat I googled him. I saw he was a marketeer and had a bit of a following and a few videos on YouTube. So naturally I played one of the videos, titled Hug Your Haters. The video was a keynote that Jay held, and I was impressed. I put his book on my “to-read list” and finally got around to it a few weeks ago.

Hug Your Haters is a book for anyone who is interested in marketing, customer service or, for that matter, any business at all. Jay’s Hug Your Haters book explains his idea of hugging and showing love to people that show your company any hate on the various social platforms available today.

Although this book is a couple of years old it’s still 100% current. The idea of hugging your haters is not to make you feel good but to show how you can grow your business with customer focus and excellent customer service, encouraging your customers to come back to you rather than using your company just the once. The book shows many examples of how companies have used complaints from disgruntled clients to their advantage, using customer feedback to improve their companies and build customer-based businesses. This, in turn, turns clients into advocates of the business and also into loyal customers, marketing the customers through word of mouth. The book is divided into various playbooks detailing how to deal with off-stage complaints (direct emails or phone calls) and on-stage complaints (via social networks with an audience). It also gives advice on various tools and software available to monitor client feedback all over the web.

The book is funny, entertaining, well written and also very informative. I’d recommend this book, but don’t just read it the once — if you want to get the most out of the book, study it, make notes and put things in place to action the tips and advice given.

If your looking to catch a copy of this book its available here

Thanks for writing this book Mr Baer, it’s well worth the read and should be on any marketeer’s bookshelf.
